5 Basic Tips for Social Media Greatness

5 Basic Tips for Social Media Greatness

In this article I give you my 5 basic tips for social media greatness. The tips may seem simple, but they take careful thought and effort to implement.

1. Know your Audience

I can’t stress enough how important it is to know your audience. If you own an ice cream Facebook fan page, but all you post about is cake, your fans will be confused as to what your mission is. It’s also important to know where you audience is. Are they only on Facebook and Twitter, then why are you on LinkedIn? Just because a social network exists, doesn’t mean you need to be on it. Do 2 social networks really well instead of 5 social networks not so well.

2. What’s in it for me?

This will differ depending on your audience is, but if you can answer this question on behalf of your audience, you will find success. Instead of posting pictures, articles and memes, try giving your fans value. If your fans feel that they are getting exclusive offers because they follow you on social media, you are doing the right thing. Give your fans the FOMO (fear of missing out) effect. Make them think that if they don’t check in with you regularly, they will miss something.

3. What are your goals?

Do you know what you are trying to accomplish with your social media? Are you trying to acquire new customers? Are you looking for brand advocates? Is your social media serving as a customer service channel? Once you know your goals, you’ll have a better sense of what your posting about. Make sure your goals are aligned appropriately. If you are looking to gain new customers and are going so with what I call the hard sell, your fans will see right through that. Most people utilize social media to connect with their friends, not to be marketed to.

4. The 80/20 Rule

There is a balance between creating contest and sharing content. If all you do is share the content of others, your fans will get bored with you because they can access what your posting about from other channels. This goes back to giving your fans value, but give them content that they can’t get anywhere else.
